Debating & Public Speaking

Murrumburrah High School participates in The Premier's Debating Challenge which is open to all NSW government schools. The competition has the aim of developing the public speaking and reasoning skills of students from Years 5 to 12.

Students practice during lunchtime meetings and have practice debates before travelling around the Riverina to compete against other schools. Students do not know the topics prior to the debate and only have 1 hour to prepare 6 minute speeches (7-8), or 8 minute speeches (9-10).

Debaters can also be invited to Leeton High School for a two-day debating workshop run by The Arts Unit NSW. These workshops focus on successful writing and creating powerful rebuttal. Students can also participate in practice debates.

Debating is a wonderful activity to be a part of and students learn valuable skills in communicating their ideas in coherent and sophisticated ways. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Public Speaking Competitions and should look out for information about competitions as they come up. Both of these activities develop fantastic skill that assists with other subjects and in life situations
